Why Does Breast Tissue Spill Out from the Sides of Your Bra and how to Fix it?

Side spillage is one of those bra fit issues that's easy to spot but often misunderstood. If you notice breast tissue pushing out from the sides of your bra cups — toward your armpits — it's not a body issue, it's a fit issue. Here's why it happens and how to fix it.

1. Your Cup Size Is Too Small This is the most common cause. When the cups are too small, they can't contain all the breast tissue, so it has nowhere to go but out the sides. Going up one or two cup sizes (while keeping the same band size) is usually the first fix to try.

2. The Bra Style Isn't Right for Your Shape Not all bra styles work for all body types. Balconette and demi-cup bras have lower, wider cups that leave the upper and outer breast exposed by design — which can cause spillage for fuller busts. A full-cup or T-shirt bra with deeper, more rounded cups will contain tissue much better.

3. Your Band Is Too Loose A loose band allows the entire bra to shift and rotate, which pushes the cups out of position. When the cups move sideways, tissue that should be inside the cup ends up outside it. Tightening the band (or going down a band size) keeps everything anchored in place.

4. The Wire Placement Is Wrong If you wear underwired bras, the wire should sit flat against your ribcage and wrap around the full base of your breast — not sit on top of breast tissue. If the wire is sitting on tissue rather than under it, the cup is too small or the style is wrong for your shape.

5. Your Bra Has Stretched Out Over time, the fabric and elastic in bra cups lose their structure. A cup that once held everything in place may no longer have the firmness to do so. If your bra is more than 6–12 months old and side spillage has appeared gradually, the bra may simply be worn out.

How to Check Your Cup Fit

• Stand in front of a mirror with your bra on
• Lean forward slightly — all breast tissue should fall into the cup naturally
• Run your finger along the side of the cup: there should be no tissue escaping under or over the edge
• The cup should lie smooth with no wrinkling (too big) or bulging (too small)
